A few years ago they released Civilization Beyond Earth and even though at the time I was quite addicted to Civ 5, Beyond Earth completely failed to hook me in the same way. So at least for me, having actual human history as part of the game is essential to the experience.

Alpha Centauri is still better than Beyond Earth, even though the gameplay has dated badly. Someone messed it up badly in my opinion.
I found Beyond Earth enjoyable enough to play, but I didn’t feel the one-more-turn pull or much of a desire to play another game.
