The morning after the Brexit vote, Nigel Farage admits money for the NHS was a lie

It is advisory. This is at the extreme edge of politics - but the government does not have to implement it. That would create a constitutional crisis, and potentially de-stabilise the entire UK.

But right now, that might be the best course.

Bit late for that.

Too late, I realized someone needed to corner Farage and say, “Eulalie,” to stop him.

I’m stunned, still. This morning they’re all back-pedaling - European Economic Area likely outcome.

But it’s the racism that’s the highest level of concern now.

That’s an insult to the Ferengi. At least they’re openly venal, rather than trying to cover it with a fig leaf.

That’s the exact phrase I scream inside my head every time I hear Farage open his mouth :rage:

At the risk of starting a sub-thread where I argue with myself, I’ve just read this interesting piece which argues the opposite.

In essence:

  • Article 50 states that a member state may decide to withdraw from the EU “in accordance with its own constitutional requirements”
  • British courts have long held that where royal prerogative conflicts with statute, statute takes precedence
  • Using the royal prerogative to invoke Article 50 would effectively gut the European Communities Act of 1972
  • Ergo, any invocation of Article 50 requires a vote in Parliament.

Utter bullshit. The mental gymnastics required to turn an example of how he would like to see the money used into a concrete promise are frankly mind blowing. This is probably why Brexit won, because they could see straight through all the spin of the Remain camp’s bullshit propaganda.

Sorry but if you’re a politician who wants to weasel out of this sort of promise/say it was “only a suggestion”, you say “we could” or “we should”, not “let’s”.

I’m sorry, was this BoingBoing story part of the Remain campaign? I’d missed that. If so, it’s pretty poorly timed.

It’s not only the ‘battlebus’ either. At least one of Leave’s posters even more explicitly said “Let’s give our NHS the £350 million the EU takes every week”.

Meanwhile, Nigel’s helping with the negotiations.
