The most 1970s moment in TV history: Gabe Kaplan vs. Robert Conrad in the Battle of the Network Stars

A telling detail from Kaplan’s wikipedia page:

“In the very first competition, Kaplan defeated Robert Conrad, who was participating in the event representing the NBC team as its captain, in a race much to Conrad’s chagrin. Kaplan, who was 31 at the time, passed Conrad, then 40, with a strong sprint to the finish line, giving ABC television network the win with 175 points.”

You could tell from how quickly Kaplan accepted the challenge, and the grin on his face, that he knew he could beat Conrad in a race.

Kaplan absolutely gives “has been around a track or footrace many a-time” vibes to me.

Then again he reminds me of my uncle a bit, who continues to run marathons even in his (now early) 70s.
