From what I’ve read, I strongly agree. I think she’s extremely self-aware as an artist. I’m not an enormous fan of her music, but I think it’s better than most commercial rap. As with Jay-Z, she seems to play to the level her legions of fans expect, but her skill is still apparent. Mass appeal comes at a cost in constraint, but it doesn’t mean the artist isn’t capable.
