It’s infuriating that they keep getting away with this bullshit.
We had a similar situation for years here in Maine when LePage was governor. He won with something like 43% of the vote, and spent his entire time in office thwarting the will of the majority. We passed expanded Medicaid, several times, and only just got it when Mills won.
We passed recreational marijuana, same thing.
Several bonds for infrastructure and offshore wind were approved by well over 50%, yet he vetoed, vetoed, vetoed. F*&^!!!
All politics is local, and never more so than in off- (or off-off-) year elections. I don’t give a damn about national polls, we need to stay engaged and make these local issues matter. It’s not a referendum on Il Douche, it is a referendum on Republican governance. If we can make it that and not let it become “socialism, BLM, Antifa are coming for you and your pure, white daughters!” we win. Dems need to be engaged and excited, because Repubs will be pissed off and terrified. We won’t convert the pissed off and terrified, I think even Biden is coming to realize that, so we need to convince those who have not bought into the Big Lie that voting still, and always has, mattered. It mattered a hell of a lot in 2020. It will matter even more in 2021 and 2022. We need to act like it, because it is true.
it seems so hard to maintain focus. my immediate family plus in-laws got out for the special election to replace ron wright. me, wife, older son, daughter-in-law, oldest grandson, three of d-i-l’s sisters and her mother to vote for jana lynn sanchez. i called the county democratic headquarters three times in two weeks to try to volunteer for phone banking for gotv efforts. voicemail voicemail voicemail. silence. the friday after the election i heard from the county chair who had just gotten back from burying his stepfather. i know things happen beyond our control but was no one available? with the number voting it would have taken fewer than 500 votes to push sanchez into the runoff instead of third place.
i understand how easy it is to feel beaten down as a democrat in texas but we have to be able to get past that and keep moving forward.
I know this won’t shock anybody, but the level of grifting, self-dealing and general hucksterism is kinda amazing. And frightening how often militaristiic terms are thrown around by these asshats, who will, of course, be nowhere near the frontlines if it comes to that. This does bring to mind that deep dive into philosophy:
