The real reason why outhouses are often depicted with crescent moons on their doors

Yeaaa, “pivot to video”… Hate wasting 15 minutes on a video that provides no information - or at least no information that couldn’t be otherwise summed up in a sentence or two that I could read in 10 seconds

Also: This is an American things, isn’t it? AFAIK, European depictions usually have a heart instead of that crescent…

Who really cares? But the moon has lots of meanings…
The moon is the perfect symbol for the old shack
I’ve seen outhouses that four seats for " family house" right in our back yard!!!
No moon though?

That’s what they call the hard sell

I’m surprised that there was no discussion of The Specialist, the 1929 humorous book by Charles Sale. It was a huge success - a runaway best seller - about a fictional privy builder, and mentions moon-shaped cutouts in the door: “Now, about ventilators, or the designs I cut in the doors. I can give you stars, diamonds, or crescents —there ain’t much choice—all give good service.” The dust cover of the hardback edition even shows a crescent moon in the illustration. Surely this book would been a major influence in it becoming fashionable to have a moon in the door.

Maybe read about this while you wait.

Spoiler: he hypothesizes, and doesn’t have a definitive answer, but wants to sell you a disposable razor (ETA: or, what @achristocat said)
