The most lasting cultural impact of Ren & Stimpy may be how John K’s comically grotesque caricature style influenced more mainstream cartoons like Spongebob Squarepants (especially the “disturbing close-ups” front).

On that note Futurama was cancelled so many times it has at least three episodes which were planned as series finales.

The horrid Kricfalusi drama aside… I recognize that his (and others’) work helped to pioneer the style of no-holds-barred, zero-limits, adult-oriented humor that (let’s face it) has influenced and been riffed off of in one way or another by other animators for the past two decades (intentionally or not) and which continues to this day. Given that, imagine my confusion when I hear cries of “nostalgia pandering” and ‘forget the old stuff… watch the new stuff’ being thrown around out there.
