Daniel Higgs played a solo show in the living room of a neighbor’s house, and the place was packed, intense show too.
There could be rules stressed to the audience by the producers for all kinds of reasons - including the program’s aesthetic or for integrity of the recording. The SNL audience has historically behaved the same way for the music portion and bands that are known for audience engagement (sing it with me, clap your hands, etc) don’t do that on SNL.
