Yeah, this is world we live in, women are perpetually punished for the actions of men they have no control over.

As far as I know, slavery is outlawed in India, so I don’t understand how these forms of slavery are allowed to persist.

Laws are meaningless if they aren’t enforced. Dowry is also supposedly outlawed but it remains a rampaging problem. I’m not sure why they aren’t actively enforced; probably lack of resources behind these issues and the fact that tradition is one tough monster to slay.
