I think the idea there is that while you or I wouldn’t make the same mistake Sacco did, everyone makes mistakes of their own and twitter’s nature strongly encourages us to make them.
Sure, but I don’t broadcast my derpitude worldwide in 140-character bites. I keep it private, at home, or occasionally on unlimited internet comments, where I can fully articulate my idiocy. I thought Twitter was a ridiculous idea when I first heard of it, and so far, I’ve seen nothing to disabuse me of that notion.
I’m not saying yes. I’m just nodding very slowly.
That’s generally a good policy.
“We’re all 140 characters away from being vilified.”
I prefer to think of it as “140 characters is more than enough rope.”
I know she thinks she was joking and as a teller of bad jokes myself I still stand with everyone on the side of righteous indignation. That said I am also trying to empathize with her regarding whatever immediate fallout is happening. To be on a plane to Africa the Friday before Xmas, I have to assume she is going on a private holiday through the new year - not work related. If that’s the case, she’s going through this self-created but media exacerbated sh@tstorm far from home and with a friend or two, but maybe not the full cadre of support she wants for this madness. For now the best hope is that South African media is able to identify her so that a comment can be obtained as quickly as possible.
I think it’s possible that she’s saying all this stupid shit in public because she’s angling for a gig at Fox “News.”
Actually, apparently her dad is a billionaire, and I think that gives some weight to my comments above regarding her privilege and likely entitlement.
Ahhh, thanks. That is indeed a suggestive new plot-thickener.
Question for openfly:
Good points, but, surely you agree she should be fired? I wouldn’t be surprised is she was already on notice given her job title and the string of various media posts that weren’t consistent with typical Corp public values.
Perhaps there were more reprimands, with this last tweet being the straw the broke the camels back (more like steel girder than a straw though…), and crossed the threshold needed to get her fired.
I just read on NY Magazine that she was fired. A part of me thinks she wanted to be fired with the question of “You think I’ll be fired if…” whatever that quote was, something about being drunk and saying stupid shit.
That’s always a possibility these days. Next her company will get death threats from the Duck Dynasty/Fox fans, sigh.
The tweet was racial, but not racist if it is true that there’s a disparity between blacks with HIV in Africa versus whites in Africa with HIV. If she was highlighting a real disparity, and highlighting it through humor, then she was doing the same sort of social consciousness-raising humor that folks like Sarah Silverman do so well. But, let’s test that. Let’s see if she was indeed highlighting a real fact… click click click wikipedia “13.6% of black Africans in South Africa are HIV-positive, whereas only 0.3% of whites living in South Africa have the disease.” Ok, so now we know she was pointing out a terrible situation, and using humor to do it. Good for her.
This woman’s father grew up in Africa, and moved his family to the US, teaching them that racism is wrong.
She knew what goes on in Africa.
Without looking at the rest of her stuff, I’m inclined to take it in the same spirit as Bono’s line from Do They Know it’s Christmas; ‘…Well tonight, just thank God it’s them instead of you.’
But given the piss-poor wordsmithery of your average dolt, it’s probably a bit too charitable to ascribe the ability to convey or comprehend such mock-cynicism, unfortunately… a reality you’d expect somebody who apparently gets paid to do PR to be intimately familiar with.
Well it could of been worse. Flash Mob attack and all that.
Hopefully she is not suicidal nor fearing for her safety at this point.
In fact, this instance of global objection is incredible and if anything, need too be taken seriously.
In a prior article on BB, a certain University addressed getting heavy with threat of firing if someone said on Twiter, you know… and go figure.
Is anyone here African? Or derived from Africa? Just a thought.
