Helps us feel useful. And yeah, as a moderately tall person, automobile shopping or rental is a hassle both in terms of leg-room and not getting a noogie from the roof. On the plus side, incentivizes me to buy used and keep a vehicle for as long as it’s economical to repair.

Although them’s the rules, they’re flexible to maximize utility. If the middle person is a small person who isn’t using their armrests, I as a large person will make use of them. I will periodically yield the armrest by alternating with crossed arms, giving them frequent opportunities to reclaim the rests if they choose, and giving me a postural break.
