I rather enjoyed his handling of the Kobayashi Maru:

What the hell is going on in this clip?

A fresh haul of lumber stacked in the corner near my workbench, all of it awaiting my time and dedication to bring them together to make something much greater. Excites me every damn time.

Youā€™re supposed to take all of the smaller numbers and use them to get the larger number up top. The operations you are allowed are addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division only. Under those rules, the highest number possible should be 601. So, Ayoade ignored the rules.

ETA: Oops, I think 660 is the highest possible. The editors regret the error and will sack those responsible.

PPPS: 900! I obviously havenā€™t done this in a while.

Two teams are competing in a maths challenge to come up with an equation using any combination of the six numbers on the board to arrive at the randomly generated three-digit number by multiplication, division, subtraction and addition.

Jon R chooses six small (value of 10 and under) numbers and Rachel Riley presses a button that generates the target number 950. Richard uses exponents, because how else will the target figure even be neared?

Are parenthesis allowed? If so this is 720

(10 * 2 * 3 * 2 ) * (5+1)

Parentheses are allowed. Iā€™ve recalculated the top to be 900. You need to add the one to the lowest other number, 2. Iā€™m out of practice.

Yes I too arrived at 900 in one of my attempts to get to 950

Every now and again Iā€™ll eat a favourite foodstuff I havenā€™t had in a while and run around in a little circle nomming.

A proper meal with family / friends, especially in a restaurant, complete with uproarious conversation and outbursts of laughter and stories and booze.

Being totally lost in thought, snapping out of it with the realisation of oneā€™s state of mind but being able to slide back into it anyway.

Watching a really good fight.

This makes me happy: kayaking + fishing. Iā€™ve done both for many years but not together until the last few years. Photo taken on my last outing, NY Harbor in mid Nov. The ~40" fish was released

Another shot in NY harbor with the Bayonne Bridge in the background.

Iā€™m a little surprised at how many responses are passively experiencing, rather actively doing something that gives you joy.

Does it matter how you get there, as long as you do?

They donā€™t let you use parentheses that way. In fact, you donā€™t normally write it out as a proper formula in that game. You just do the operations in whatever order you fancy. So, in effect, you are using parentheses, but I donā€™t think anyone actually uses them.

ETA: Also, you donā€™t have to use all the numbers. You can ignore the ones you donā€™t need.

PPPS: The editors regret the thread hijackā€¦

How about actively being passive? It takes work to still my mind and find peace.

speaking of maths, this is the sort of thing that makes me think I might understand maths, but when comes to proving things, Iā€™m rubbish.

And thereā€™s like, different types of active. I mean, even sitting and listening to music, you might not be doing anything physical, but you can be plugged in and attentive to whatā€™s going on, emotionally engaged with it, which isnā€™t exactly passive. Youā€™re putting something into the experience to get more out of it.
