Wait, how do you know?
Modiphius Games just put out a Star Trek game. (Kind of. The PDF is out, and they’re waiting on errata to print the hardcopy.) Covers the TOS and TNG-DS9-Voyager eras.
In our game we’re currently in a fight with some Jem’Hadar while trying not to break the Prime Directive on this unexplored world. I don’t think the Jem’Hadar care that much for non-interference, though.
Can’t imagine why he’d change rules right in the middle of a campaign.
Incidentally the “middle” of his campaign would be 1999 or 2000…wow.
It’s not so much a “campaign” as having random people over to join in, but D&D has evolved quite a bit since 2nd edition. I’d imagine that someone that dedicated would look into what other editions of the game could offer his players that AD&D doesn’t have.
I do so love Traveller!
I think that the little A5 books are such lovely artifacts. “Roll 8+”
The day (night) our Traveller GM’s car got burgled of all (!) his game books, and only his game books (!!), is remembered with sadness to this day … He ran long campaigns over 15+ years.
That’s impressive. I moved around a lot early in life, and it was pretty inconvenient to play regularly. But I still have all of my old books. None of the toys made it through, but I kept most of my books.
Except for the original white boxed set. Long gone. But I do still have the Holmes Basic, AD&D, and what I could get of the Basic D&D stuff (Erol Otus- and Larry Elmore-art adorned sets). I mostly like playing that.
Later, Star Frontiers, Call of Cthulhu and Talisman.
We used to play a game called Living Steel back in the late Eighties / Early Nineties that was basically a sci-fi RPG. It nicked elements from all sorts of different sources, but had an incredibly intricate combat system that was almost sim-like in its attention to detail. It gave the game a distinct militarist feel, although the over-complex combat did result in a long-standing joke phrase in our RPG sessions of crying out “Is he dead yet?”
I get the feeling that with more than 10 participants, a single combat scenario could have taken 35 years to resolve.
‘nungesser’ has also linked to the site in the reply, but it is worth just wandering around www.drivethrurpg.com or www.rpgnow.com (they are, basically, the same site).
bundleofholding.com can be good as well.
Fair warning though: If you have any inclination to just buy and collect systems because they look cool, these sites are all pretty dangerous.
Good for you, best of luck with the projects!
Also, TIL there is such a thing as deluxe T&T.
Oh, yeah, wasn’t Living Steel based of the Phoenix Command system; which used actually ballistic data to model injuries and worked in micro-second long phases? Kind of like the CQB equivalent of the Harpoon naval war game.
Thank You! I have struggled to remember the name of this game for years!
the Vrusk are the coolest gaming race ever.
I leave that to my RPG-collecting housemate, who has literally hundreds. The sheer scope of subjects for cool RPGs is massive. I’ve played one-off or short campaigns of Ghostbusters, Call of Cthulhu, D&D 2nd, 3rd, 3.5, 4th, and 5th editions, Changeling, Pathfinder, Pugmire, Star Wars, Spirit of 77, and many more. Looking forward to trying Tales from the Loop, which is a Stranger Things style RPG.
Metamorphosis Alpha and Gamma World lean more to fantasy in science techno babble wrappings though.
Hah, I remember playing an NWN1 server that was based on someone’s 10 year long campaign. Fun server, I wish it was still online.
I wish I could draw like Simon Stålenhag.
Actually, I just wish I could draw at all.
I’ve really liked the Modiphius output, especially the Achtung! Cthulhu modules using the Savage Worlds base, a great way of mixing two types of horror together.
Not quite an “old timer” as that, but I did start with the Basic box in '76 if I recall correctly, eventually getting all the supplements.
Through the years, moved on to AD&D, then 2nd ed, Skipped 3rd and 4th, but currently in a 5th ed campaign, which I think may be the best so far. As long as they don’t muck it up with further complexity - for that, I go to Pathfinder.
Still have the original Gamma World, though I haven’t played it in ages. Great game, though!
Also have Boot Hill, another good one from the Olden Days…
