I’m not much of an optimist. But I was at a chemistry conference last September and learned all about the history of HFCs’ predecessors, CFCs … and how the banning of CFCs is an example of how the world can co-operate to mitigate an existential environmental risk.
Every now and then someone tries to restart CFC production, clandestinely, but satellite spectography can pinpoint the source of the breach, because there is now so little CFC in the atmosphere (and we’re only a few decades away from a complete reversion of ozone depletion).
If only international governments would treat climate change with the same urgency.
