Like the original article says, I’ve been playing it in Games Magazine for years.
I haven’t played Battleships for about 50 years, because as pointed out, it’s a tedious luck fest of a game. Its one virtue is that you can play it with just paper and pencil, especially if you have plenty of maths paper. That made it popular with bored schoolboys in the early 70s.
The Battleship puzzle cited here doesn’t have any “sudoku” elements at all, unless your definition is wildly elastic.
Now, if you really want Sudoku with your Battleships, then Thomas Snyder has you covered. (These are great.)
