Well, this is [totally not in any way] scary.
But my own recorded voice doesn’t sound like me.
Has anyone come up with an ‘event horizon’ type name for the point where a cool idea becomes weaponized?
Series A funding.
This was one of the things the T-800 did in the original Terminator
Nothing to see here, everything is fine
My voice is my passport. Verify me.
oh fuck here we go now. I NEVER AUTHORIZED THAT PURCHASE!!! yes you did sir. plays recording of my voice. i hate everything.
It makes me wonder why people start working on these deep-fake-type ideas. Don’t they consider the kind of world they are creating?
ha ha ha of course they don’t
That ideological ship sailed a thousand years ago.
Since someone forged a signature
Since someone faked a painting or book
Since photography was invented
Since photoshop, since protools, since since since
etc etc
Does this mean that someone might actually be able to create more Justin Bieber? Or Taylor Swift??
Each new day is a fresh hell…
If I was being charitable I would guess that what they were trying to do is create a product that could imitate the voice of some celebrity that could then be used to be the voice of your Google assistant or something like that. What they didn’t do was think of all the ways that this technology could be misused.
Yeah… no kidding. Gonna put a lot of voiceover people out of work too.
i dunno about that. acting isn’t just saying words. there’s things like tone, emotion, speed, pauses, volume, deliberate alterations to speak with different voices. more than i could list i’m sure.
listen to a bunch of books on tape, and you can see how different the quality between readers can be.
[ edit: it might be great for pickups though. ]
Creeps make deep fakes for plausible deniability.
I’m kind of impressed how much you can get it to swear and/or talk inappropriately.
Damnit. My voice used to be my passport, Now I can’t verify shit.
If this turns into a reasonably affordable product I can see it being used to create spoken dialogue in mods for games like Skyrim or Fallout where modders want to do quests for existing NPCs but there isn’t appropriate dialogue already recorded for them.
I’ll add that the female voice is a lot better at swearing than the male in the examples.
E.g., try Female Sample #3 with “If you’re one hundred percent impatient, you’ll give up at the first fucking sign of bullshit and never make it to where you want to go.”
