Maybe social media that revolves around people just shouting into the wind whatever happens to be on their mind at any given moment just wasn’t meant to be.
Oh good, another reason to add to the list of reasons why NOT to join Threads. One of my biggest complaints about Twitter was the way it would show you tweets of people you didn’t follow that the ones you followed liked or interacted with. Sounds like this is that but without the need for anyone you know to be following them, which… yuck!
You know what they (well, Zuckerberg himself) say about people who trust Zuckerberg.
Don’t forget that Meta will also gladly share your information with authorities if (for example) you are a person who got an abortion in one of the places that recently became illegal. Or help facilitate a genocide if they don’t have enough moderators who speak your region’s language.
I wonder when Apple will launch a social media service.
I am simultaneously excited and filled with despair at the thought of that.
I’m of the same mindset. If Mastodon isn’t going to win over the masses, then at least let something that will federate do so, then I can still follow people I’m interested in who chose threads as their home.
However in this case, Threads already stated that a feed of just the people you follow is “on the list” for the app (along with federating for that matter.)
If anything, I tip my hat to the Infrastructure team at Meta - they had a launch that almost certainly must have exceeded all expectations and their platform didn’t have so much as a hiccup. I hope we get a blog post on exactly how they dealt with the scale of all of this.
Must access health data? Can’t ‘bounce’ or ever quit or you must delete your Instagram also? Social experiment reveals fear and hate of ‘other’. Way back when the idiocy became apparent, we could just go back to making your own blog with a chat box sidebar and then have a feed of what blogs you wanna follow. Let’s just do that. Or go play outside
There is no desktop access so… it’s a non-starter for me.
Mastodon is much nicer
“Threads will be terrible” seems like the easiest prediction in the world. Of course it’s going to steal all your data, flood you with ads and brands, and be riddled with Nazis who won’t be moderated.
Everything these CEOs do is all of that. Why even give it a chance, honestly?
I barely remembered that they tried that once:
Threads is not a space for politics or porn so hopefully it won’t interfere too much with a real contender
… if that were really what it was for, there would not be any “reply” functionality
It’s… funny… it’s a hot take… it makes a point or two.
