Glad that got straightened out. I kinda dig the nation-state-actor-bot paranoia thing, but I’m surprised that being critical of a polarized gestalt engenders such suspicion.
Also, what’s up with the ETA thing?

Stands for edited to add. I try to add that if my edits are for anything other than grammar of spelling (as they often are).
Likely, but I also didn’t think that a Babylon 5 reference wouldn’t be appreciated here.
Here’s the mainline reference:
It’s not that. We get a lot of newcomer trollies on hot button topics. That said, you get major points from me for referencing one my favorite B5 episodes. Sincerely hope you stick around. Sorry if our learned suspicion is a bit much.
Why wouldn’t I want the second amendment dismantled? Also, when did I even mention the second amendment? Hint: I didn’t.
I’m not American, and I think Australia has a good gun control model. Canada is better than the states but we share a border with you so guns are always going to be around(not just rural/hunting weapons).
I’m not sure who you are trying to talk to at this point.
Or
Aaaah! Gotcha.
My brain kept parsing as ETA as Estimated Time of Arrival, or thinking ETA was another person on the forum.
You, for saying this…
In about 10 mins.
Welcome to Fantasy Island.
Thanks and zero worries. These are indeed strange times that we’re wading through.
That’s weird; ‘Green and Purple’ are also Mardi Gras colors, the Joker’s and the Phaet’s color scheme.
I’d never think of them as ‘opposites’:
Perhaps you’re a secret Bodhisattva so adept at seeing past dualistic illusions - straight through to the unified whole - that you’ve merely forgotten they are opposites in some contexts.
What if the checkered Mardi Gras patterns where black and white? Also, they’re next to each other on the color wheel, so you’re totally right in terms of traditional color-spaces.
Of course, now you’ve got me wondering if making the Drazi split between Purple and Green wasn’t a reference to the Joker’s color scheme.
There may indeed be a time before public officials should speculate in a politically charged way, but on the boingboing BBS, it’s pretty much open season on everything, all the time. It sounds like Mr_raccoon is like me – not yet having heard anything about the shooter until you mentioned that a Muslim is the “obvious suspect”. Then you launch into the standard, boilerplate NRA-supporter hogwash about this “not being the time”. It’s as if what you are sensitive about is people imagining that the shooter is white.
J. Michael Straczynski has done a lot of work in comics including the DC universe, so it wouldn’t surprise me. Also, you’ll find there are actually quite a few B5 fans here (we even had a whole thread on a couple years back). That said, details of the topic are probably best left to another thread so we don’t derail this one from the topic at hand.
No, I think it’s more that I’m a visual artist, and it’s just habitual for me to think in terms of the color wheel:
Indeed!
Looks like my edits and your reply crossed in the aether. Felt compelled to revise it after checking looking at a color wheel.
Double plus thanks for giving me menmonic device to remember purple and yellow are opposites in color theory. My brain usually does color as an afterthought, or else as part of some half-assed synesthesia.
How’s the local culture here in terms of topic drift? I don’t want to disrespect the topic at hand, especially as a newcomer…
It’s easygoing to a point. If it begins taking over the thread you can request that the moderators split/fork the digression into its own thread, which they’re happy to do.
Our mods and community tend to be pretty okay with some topic drift, but it’s best not to derail relatively heated topics, especially when they’re fairly new. That said, a lot of us approach Boing Boing through the BBS forum, so we’re likely to see new topics created by users and, as @gracchus said, you can request a fork. Just hit the flag icon on the point-of-divergence where you’d like to request a split and you should get a response within at least 24 to 48 hours (usually less). As long as newcomers engage with good faith, while it may take a short while for us to see you as one of us Happy Mutants, we’re pretty glad to have new good-faith members.
We also have exceptionally good mods and our chief mod is our biggest B5 fan.
Oh, his handle is @orenwolf and you always message him directly too.
Just in case you need to reference them (and sometimes I do), here are the Community Guidelines:
I have to agree, I really didn’t see where you were coming from with your comments. His post was a reply to the first person to post who wanted to start connecting dots that EA not censoring a song with lyrics about KP, so maybe the shooter was a Trumpkin or right wing gun nut wanting to rage against the NFL and/or EA. So bringing a political angle when there wasn’t any evidence of political motivation. I don’t know if it is uniquely American, but speculation does tend to run rampant when bad things happen. I didn’t see anything that mentioned or supported the 2nd Amendment or gun rights. YMMV and maybe you picked up on something I didn’t, but objectively your comments confused me.
The biggest joke we will be hearing is that next year’s tournament has metal detectors or security or some other “hardening” bullshit.
The entire country (besides military bases, banks, nuclear plants, etc.) is a soft target.
Hardening this one particular soft target just gives the illusion of safety, to the tournament goers and the nation, without having the slightest effect on the real problem. They did the same thing at Sandy Hook; they rebuilt it as a fortress.
But what happens when they go to the mall or a movie theatre or a church or a little league game?
