Red river cereal is back. It has been resurrected. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/north/red-river-cereal-ontario-flour-mill-northerners-1.6657563
I distinctly remember it being called Tiger Tiger in my youth. It was my favourite treat during summers spent at Melville Beach, Saskatchewan with my grandparents in the 80s.
They’re only selling Red River cereal online at the moment, at $8 for a 908 gram package. Plus $20 shipping from Ontario to my location (western Canada).
Co-op and Save-On sell Sunny Boy for $5 for 907 gram package. Not quite the same, but it fills the need for a cheap grainy hot breakfast.
As I said the last time this came up, here in Scotland, I’ve only ever seen it once, where it was being sold as “Dundee United” ice-cream (their team colours are orange and black).
It’s an odd combination. I’d think that orange and chocolate would be better. My dad tells me about the time he assumed it was orange and chocolate (you know, like those chocolate mandarin oranges you bust into segments during xmas holidays), and was terribly surprised because he hates licorice. Licorice and orange seems like it would be orange juice and toothpaste, though.
I love licorice, and I like weird stuff. (peanut butter and pickled onion sandwiches! vanilla ice cream with chili crisp! gochujang cookies! diet coke and chocolate ice cream ‘cooler’ drinks!) I need to find some of this stuff.
The Lucerne brand ice cream, it’s still called Tiger Tiger - just bought some in summer.
Fiddleheads are well known in the U.S. Midwest, FWIW.
Nanaimo bars are also Aussie, aren’t they?
Cloudberries can be found in the PNW of the U.S.
Bridge mix was common when I was growing up, again in the U.S. Midwest.
And I love spruce beer! That’s more a New England (U.S.) thing than Midwest, though.
I mean, they are named for a town in British Columbia, so I think we get to claim them.
Not so RIP.
Yes, absolutely, but I was responding to the idea that the list of foods were only available in Canada.
Oh, gotcha. I bet quite a few Canuck things have made it to Australia (and vice-versa). There’s a lot of cross pollination. A few members of my extended family have moved back and forth more than once and I’m sure we’re not the only ones.
Yassss! I just learned about this and ordered a big box. I now have a lifetime supply just in case this happens again. Long live Red River Cereal!
If you’re west coast, there have been a couple sources.
Virtuous Pie (in Vancouver & Victoria) was selling it by the pint around a year ago, unfortunately not at the moment, first time I’d had it in over 30yrs tho!
Green Cuisine in Victoria has recently started offering it at their restaurant as well. Both vegan. =)
