A spokesperson for the Florida Democratic Party tells the Washington Blade it vows to fight for the repeal of that state’s anti-transgender bathroom bill, which went into effect July 1, after being called out for not counting any anti-trans legislation among “10 Bad Bills” the party recently shared on its social media accounts.
But in the 17 days since the laws went on the books, the Florida Democrats still haven’t made a single social media statement regarding those anti-trans laws. Their last post on the party’s official website even mentioning the trans community was on June 22, after a federal judge blocked Florida’s ban on gender-affirming care, as the Blade reported.
QAnon Anonymous Episode 239: Transmaxxing
Down the rabbithole of a right wing panic, inside joke, and image board meme turned bizarre community. “Transmaxxing”, on the surface, is the idea that young men (mostly involuntarily celibate or “incels”) are becoming trans women to increase their odds of getting laid. In right wing media, the concept is being covered as a serious movement so as to fuel harmful transphobic narratives and erode civil protections for trans people. But is it actually a thing? And who came up with “transmaxxing”? Liv Agar investigates.
So, this is swell. The US Pro Disc Golf Tour was confronted about their bullshit policy against trans women. Rather than fix it, they cancelled the entire womens’ division. They took their frisbees and went home.
Their stated reasons are the same bullshit ones as always. They think trans women are somehow magically good at sports. Even if that were true, here’s the important pull quote:
“ If you look at the world of men’s swimming, Michael Phelps has a genetic anomaly that he doesn’t produce as much lactic acid as any other male, which is why he’s able to swim for so much longer. Is that an unfair advantage? It is. So do you regulate that everyone must have a certain amount of lactic acid percentage? You get your NBA superstars who are over seven feet. Not everyone can be seven feet. Should you have a maximum or minimum height for NBA players? I mean, the world of sports is full of natural advantages in genetics."
Unusually for the CBC, this article is not great. It gives equal footing to the pearl clutching and hand wringing bigots, going on and on about how “nuanced” and “complex” this issue is. No it isn’t. It’s easy. See quote above.
Nobody ever cared about whether genetics and hormones mattered in sports, until trans women wanted to play. Now suddenly they’re the most important thing in the world somehow.
I think it’s slightly worse, nobody cared until trans people started to win. Pro disc-golf had no problem with Natalie playing in the women’s division until she won.
Cancelling the entire womens’ division probably created a whole lot of TERFs overnight, too. Among people I know, I’ve seen sports be the line in the sand where otherwise enlightened supportive women suddenly become transphobic. Turns out they didn’t really believe trans women are women after all.
Which is odd - don’t they see how society treats us?
Your joke is well made, but sadly there’s an aspect of that that makes it even worse. The goal of oppressors is always to get the minorities to start stepping on each other so they don’t have to. It always works because when you beat people down enough, they start looking for people below them on the pole to take it out on. That’s how many women see us- as someone even worse off that they can feel good about punching down at.
I know you know all this, I’m just preaching into the void here.
Rightwing organizations in Ohio are trying their best to tank the abortion rights constitutional amendment that’s on the ballot in November. Their latest tactic? Link the language of the referendum, which would protect abortion rights, to the conservative boogeyman du jour: demonizing trans people.
I like the way my own sport’s regulating body has handled things. I’ve never heard a peep of complaint at all. These seem like simple rules to handle what should be a simple issue.
- Adventure racers should be welcomed on a “no questions asked”’ basis. If an athlete chooses to discuss their gender identity history, this information must be treated with the utmost confidentiality and only shared with the permission of the athlete.
- USARA affirms that gender affirming surgery and hormones, as well as other medicines that may help an individual’s expression align with their identity, are complex processes based on genuine medical need. It is not something people undertake lightly, nor in order to gain competitive advantage.
- Adventure racers will be welcomed on the same “no-questions-asked” basis at all USARA-affiliated and sanctioned events.
and
USARA events commonly have three basic divisions – men’s, women’s and mixed – that default to using the gender binary to determine participation in each division. However, we recognize not all individuals’ gender identities are binary, and a gender binary default for participation could potentially make some individuals feel excluded and unsafe. Accordingly, within these divisions as they currently exist, USARA will not discriminate on the basis of gender identity, regardless of sex assigned at birth, or any other form of gender expression for participation in any division.
We affirm that people of all gender identities should have the freedom to participate in the division in which they feel most comfortable and safe based on their gender identity and should be recognized, respected, and included at every level of the sport.
An adventure racer’s self-declared gender at registration will be accepted on a “no-questions-asked” basis, regardless of governmental or other documentation.
It is important to note and use the pronouns for an individual, and not to make assumptions. Racers and race directors should default to asking people how they would like to be addressed - e.g. he/she/they, etc.
That’s a fantastic policy.
Especially the part about “we know nobody would ever do this just to gain an edge in sports”.
No kidding! Transitioning is incredibly expensive, difficult and life changing. If you just want to cheat at sports, holy cow are there easier ways to do that. Like the way cis people have always done it, for example- doping.
In the context of our current national bullshit, it seems fantastic. But in truth it’s pretty damn common-sense and we shouldn’t have to say it. What was heartening was that the debate around putting that statement together was how to make sure it went far enough, rather than the opposite.
The whole US/Canada/UKoGBaNI/Aus/NZ/South Africa community in the sport (which draws people across the political spectrum) is pretty progressive with these attitudes. One cool thing is that the main/most popular podcast partners with a group to encourage and support women and girls in the sport in Afghanistan and Pakistan. [https://www.ascendathletics.org/aboutus]
I like this tribe.
Less than a month before the Smithsonian’s Asian American Literature Festival was to begin, staffers prepared what they considered to be a routine memo discussing programs involving “potentially sensitive issues” that they knew the host institution would want to be aware of in advance.
Among the matters cited in the memo obtained by The Washington Post: a panel about book bans, and two events featuring queer, trans and nonbinary writers.
Hours later, the acting director of the Smithsonian Institution’s Asian Pacific American Center, Yao-Fen You, informed organizers that she had decided to cancel the entire festival because of “unforeseen circumstances.”
Cancelled in anticipation of terrorist threats I assume
