When I read in the headlines that having had Covid 19 doesn’t necessarily make one immune to catching it again… If that’s the case, how would someone else’s antibodies be any better?
Not even Peter Thiel would take that.

That’s a big fear. Just like one doesn’t get immune to the common cold, some of which are caused by a common coronavirus, vs. a novel coronavirus. So, I guess there’s precedent

This is another example where I hope the experts will take some time to explain what’s what as if they were talking to a smart yet ignorant audience.
The reason the common cold is so hard to innoculate against, is that it mutates quickly in a non-trivial way. Covid 19 mutates enough to show different strains, but not so much that we expect symptoms to shift or lethality to increase, and not so much that we might need a different vaccine for each strain.
So the theory of why naturally acquired antibodies arent sufficient to prevent another illness, can’t rest on that. (I suppose it’s naive to assume there has to be a theory about it, observed fact just is, after all)
I suppose it’s plausible that the only way we’ll ever be able to fight this thing, is with social distancing and testing. In which case the shape of human civilization has been permanently changed from what it was before.
Wait, I know how this kind of news pans out.
- Scientists: We are currently conducting antibody research using the blood of Covid-19 survivors including Tom Hanks.
- Trump: Tom Hanks’ blood cures Coronavirus!
- MAGA Cultists: We demand the blood of Tom Hanks! [Red-hatted mob storms Hanks’ home, rips him limb from limb in attempt to score a few drops of his precious blood]

Scientists: …yeah Tom Hanks is great, but you know… Trump is better. At everything.
MAGA cultists: … huh … they’re right, right? he is, right?

I forget whether it was Bowser or Blue, but one of them was a city councillor here for some years. And that was when their career was well developed.
I think a !ot of it is under study. The scientists are cranking out the studies in parallel because if they did it in serial, it could be the next century.
They want Tom Hanks blood for study. Maybe it will work, maybe not.
I suppose we can think of Hank’s immune system as being partly trained to deal with covid-19. It may not be all the way there but its better than nothing. Maybe the immunity doesn’t entirely prevent you from getting sick, it just helps deal with an infection once it takes off.
I think this is largely the point of people like Hanks and Wilson donating plasma — so that scientists can see how the antibodies in their blood interact with the virus, and figure out what kind of solution might be possible.
Presumably because he has bodyguards.
