Top Vatican official charged with mutiple child sex offenses

IIRC, Pope Francis personally selected Cardinal Pell to head the new Secretariat for the Economy and clean up the Vatican’s finances.

True, although the “storm” part would be fun to see.

As always there is a great hue and cry about the poor victims of this seemingly never ending sexual abuse but I never see a damn thing done in terms of educating kids before they become victims. Why the hell can’t we have honest sex education that includes telling kids that some adults may try to use them. Teach kids how to resist and talk about what happens to them. Lets get the victims the help they need but damn it, lets get proactive and teach potential victims to be aware and protect themselves.
Its also pisses me off that we weep and gnash our teeth about the victims of sexual abuse while daily ignoring refugee kids, kids fleeing gang violence in Central America. dead black kids littering our streets. Abuse is abuse, a kid with a bullet in his heart, a kid who has been raped, kids blown out of their home by war are all victims of fucked up adults. Is one type of abuse worse than another? Maybe we should really give a shit about all the poor little guys and make a kinder world instead of allowing despots to rule. Can anyone name a world leader that really is working to help kids become healthy adults?

I’m with you. I guess 1) kids don’t vote, and 2) healthy adults don’t make dumb citizens.

People do their best in terms of trying to help kids not become victims, but we just can’t do it. Children don’t have much more chance at dealing with an adult emotional manipulator than they do at dealing with an adult physical attacker. They’re at a huge disadvantage. Plus, abusers are specifically looking for vulnerable and isolated kids to abuse. No matter how much we bring up the mean through education, two standard deviations down is going to be extreme vulnerable.

Since abuse usually happens at the hands of someone who the children and their parents trust, we can’t really, in a broad sense, protect them either - it will be one of the protectors who abuses them.

I’m with you in general. We don’t, as a society, really give off a “we care about kids” vibe. Still, I’m glad to see that people aren’t being treated as immune because they are “important” people. But in a way it’s just a sign of the church’s waning power. Those with real power are still largely immune.

Unfortunately you’re right. In part I was venting my frustration at this
country’s puritanical attitude regarding any mention of sex. Then the
hypocrisy we have at the “poor” victim of sexual abuse while ignoring kids
who refugees, or blown to bits by “smart” bombs. The media plays on
emotions using kids as a commodity rather than actually giving a damn.

Wouldn’t it be great if we hunted down the perps who create the wars and
social conditions that destroy children with the same fevor that we hunt
down the sexual vultures that prey on kids. Not possible I know but
sometimes it’s nice to dream of justice.
