It’s one of my must-do activities at our county fair. I especially enjoy it when one of the lovingly maintained tractors from the 1950s out-pulls a newer tractor.

I don’t know. Call me a liberal tree hugger but I prefer weekend events that leave me less soot stained.

Basically, you have a whole of angular momentum built up by the fast (and large, weighty) driveshaft. Momentum can’t be destroyed, so when something locks up, the momentum is instantly transferred to the whole engine. All at once. And it flies out of the engine compartment.
At least that’s how I interpret it.
