why do young people think women all dressed like they were in a Pat Benatar video back in the 80s?
I’m sure they turned the cheesy factor up to 11 for comedic effect. It’s not like Back to the Future was an especially accurate and objective depiction of what the 1950s were like.

no, but they were spot-on for the then-current look of the mid-1980s, at least.
Looks fun; I won’t go into it with any expectations, other than that.

That’s because the first movie wasn’t riffing on the mid-80s, it was riffing on the 1950s. When Marty traveled to the futuristic world of 2015 in the second movie, he visited a café that was an over-the-top parody of the 1980s because they figured people in the early 21st Century would find amusement in the quirkiest aspects of that decade.
I think the filmmakers know what they are doing here.
