Trailer of Dune

Yes.

From the Department of “This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things,” I wonder how long it will take for the loony white supremacy crowd to appropriate whatever they find convenient about that word “crusade” over the word “jihad.”

A reading of the glossary in the back of the book Dune quickly reveals plenty of Arabic word borrowings:

Yes. I am grateful for people of color I see cast here. And the fact that Villeneuve got international actors involved is also nothing but good IMO.

What a missed opportunity though to have no callbacks AFAICT to the underpinnings of the culture, the world-building he (Villeneuve) created for us.

Yeah, heaven forfend any intrusion of institutionalized oppression, violence, pillage of resources, economic inequality, greed, corruption, war, murder, etc. in the movie or book be compared with oh, reality. Who knows what they are missing re the subject matter of the book, but those who argue the mechanics of the story are “fantasy fiction” are missing… something… big and important to be sure.

Brian Eno was in charge of the “Prophecy Theme” in Lynch’s version of the film, and I sense an additional nod as there are ethereal qualities in both Pink Floyd’s and Eno’s work.

Thanks for posting this. I had missed it entirely. Well done.

I sincerely hope the ecological message (one of the many messages in the book) will find a receptive and active new audience of thinkers and doers.

Stuff I did not know about the book and its publication woes:

Wot? Kynes was to be the main character?!?!?
Hmm. Explains much, now that I think about it.
