Trump administration bans diversity training for federal workers, calling it "Anti-American"

Also, you really need to NOT use that word. Just stop it. Putting it in a story doesn’t make it magically okay. It’s still offensive and hurtful.

My military diversity training included all the words anyone in the group called any ethnicity/nation of origin or racial group you had ever heard of regardless.

Most people had no idea the terms were derogatory. This was enlightening to me.

Okay. This seems like what you were TRYING to say before.

But how anyone didn’t know it was racist then (in the 70s) is beyond me. Plenty of white people were perfectly aware [ETA: word correction] of how offensive it was to Black folks, because it was part of the public conversation in the 70s, thanks in part to the rise of Black power, which sought to address these cultural issues. However, if you learned something about racism due to this traing, that’s a good thing.

Specifically, though, he’s wanting to ban critical race theory in diversity training, as they see it as an illegitimate version of diversity training. It addresses issues like white male privilege and how our systems are built on racist and misogynistic structures. Diversity training has changed since the 90s.

The 1990s! I’m talking old school when it was naked and unafraid. You either learned all people are human or you didn’t. There were no scores. It wasn’t Pass/Fail, you just sat there and heard it all. Back in the 1970s PC stood for Providence College.

We’re talking about right now that the primary means of diversity training is being banned by the current administration.

And no, the current wave of diversity training isn’t lacking. It’s actually much more in line with reality of how racism is replicated within our society. It’s not just people saying racial slurs, it’s a large scale cultural and systemic problem, and if we don’t deal with it in that way, then we’re fucked.

Okay, I’ve had time to delve deeper into this, and then calm down. (It took a minute.)

I have experience with diversity training in civil service. We got it first in 1982 (along with the bleach, rubber gloves, and dental dam AIDS kits), then a few years later because of complaints. Our diversity training wasn’t about color, it was about combating homophobia. We never had diversity training about color, because 80% of the workforce was black, including the supervisors. If you were racist, you didn’t last long. It’s hard for a white person to complain about working with black people to a black supervisor, black ombudsman, and black union official.

Anyway, I had always thought civil service jobs were great because you had to pass a test to get a job, and it was specifically about the job - numbers and alphabetizing for clerks, etc. Not something that weighted for anything other than suitability for the position. The workforce was diverse, historically and still today, form what I’ve seen and heard, and usually the workers don’t care about race, religion, or gender, they only care about who’s slacking and who stunk up the lunchroom.

Except it’s different in DC, apparently, and white men who have a hard time facing reality are pandered to in their jobs, until the complaints reach the top - political appointees that have not risen to their jobs through the civil service. White men who have other white men to thank for their appointment. And thanking may mean anything, including stopping the training that is supposed to show white men that there are other people on this planet who are as worthy as they are.

This banning, and the anti-American label, signals “White Men Above All !!!” It is codifying racism, bigotry, and misogynism into “The Way America Is !!!” at a time when the concerted effort of the whole country is needed. It signifies divsiveness, not unity; status quo instead of progress; and regression instead of growth. This administration is doing all it can to drag us backwards.

which takes all the power out Tommasini’s argument.
