Trump elected president

I should probably run for president in 2020!

I wonder who “a better candidate” might be. Tonight’s win from the right suggests that a candidate running from Hillary’s left - I gather this is the suggestion of many here - would not have been much better. I caucused for Sanders, but Trump’s base has as much hatred for anything that smacks of socialism as it does for anything that smacks of Clintonism, and if his supporters were any better than hers at actually showing up he would have done better in the primaries.

The polls seem to have been systematically off by a number that was far lower than her lead before the FBI intervention. And 3rd party voters made a difference in at least two key states, even if you assume many would have otherwise simply stayed home. I agree that neither is definitive proof of anything, but it is about as clear as anything can be in politics.

And you can keep telling yourself that Hillary’s loss was due to policy and not sexism, but that doesn’t explain how those "TRUMP THAT BITCH" T-shirts became a staple at his political rallies.

Not a chance in the universe that he’d have won this thing if male and female candidates were held to the same standards.

It played a role, but I doubt that it was decisive.

Yup, the double standards are extreme and obvious, and many of the Trumpkins are misogynist turds who were extra-double-excited to vote against a woman. But I’d say that the driving force behind the campaign was racial and religious bigotry.

It’s the one common interest that binds the factions of the GOP together. Some of 'em care more about the white part, some of 'em care more about the Christian part, but all of 'em agree that anyone who isn’t a white Christian is one of those other people.

Also not a matter to joke about, please.

Far more than “a role.” These two candidates never would have been facing off against each other in the first place if it weren’t for those sexist double standards.

I’m afraid you won’t be able to: DNC Democrats would likely see you as a possible winner so they would disqualify you.

But you can try with Greens and Libertarians, they are usually very open to field insane candidates.

Laugh in the face of doom. I think that will serve me well in the next few years.

As long as you still get your butt out there and work for your convictions, that is.

Laugh, bitter laugh in the face of doom. Yes, I understand that.

The worst thing is that no matter how bad Trump’s presidency may turn out to be, I can’t see the electorate learning from this and voting for a better candidate in 2020. They rejected reality this time around, what’s going to stop them from doing so again in four year’s time?

I thought I was being flippant, um, 7 months back when all I could think of was

… Now I regret that dismissiveness

Yeah, that’s the weird thing. I like Hillary, but realize she was a rather unpopular candidate and it would have been a “third term” for Dems. However, to lose against this giant dickhole, and the two houses going the other way as well, there’s something deeper going on here. Can it change in 2020? Maybe. Depends on how bad things go, probably. But it’s a very, very steep hill to climb.

hey, I trusted you

…and the US keeps wondering why they are not seen as faultless example anymore…

Imagine if Obama had had 8 years with a Democrat Senate and House and majority progressive Justices!

Anyway no ones talking about this and I know no-one is going to care now but where you have two party systems you create more and more partisan positions on issues that should be bipartisan.
I dont believe Brexit or Trump would have happened if those excluded from the political consensus had had a voice through Proportional Representation. The gerrymandering of the House is also clearly unbalanced.

Falling back on sexism is the ultimate in willingly obtuse denial here.

Racism, yes, but statistically nobody voted against Hillary because she has a vagina. They held Trump to a different standard because that’s what he was running on, like all his lies didn’t matter for him but did for her.

Elizabeth Warren could have done a lot better, even with vagoo, because she’s not a corporate whore who’s completely sold out Democratic principles to line her own pockets like both of the Clintons have.

I wholeheartedly disagree. Many Trump voters may not have admitted to themselves that they were giving Trump a pass on behavior that no woman running for the office could possibly get away with, but that is damn well what happened.

but one knows that the republicans (on this side of the pond: conservatives) are a bunch of unlikeble characters with horrible policies - I don’t expect anything good from them. my relationship to liberals (here: social-democrats) is a different one: they disappoint me often but deep in my heart I hope and expect better.

I criticize the SPD all the time, not because the policies are that much worse compared to the CDU but as my demands much higher (the conservative parties are anyway a lost cause)

That very much depends on whether the Democrats learn anything from this. Hopefully once they’re done raging (a few days is perfectly understandable) and take some deep breaths.

I watched BöhmisWahlLokal until 3 am or so, then I was too sleepy (and also a bit drunk). Went to bed optimistically, had a good sleep, got up in a good mood. Then. This.
