Trump elected president

So I’ve been a bit depressed today and giving this some thought.

I’ve been heartbroken that so many American’s could support someone so racist/sexist/classist and an overall bigot. i was wondering how so many americans could be those things. It occurred to me that while sure there are some of those, that many of trump supporters are good hearted people duped into voting against their own interests.

One of my sisters is a Trump supporter and nothing i said could change her mind. She is a good hearted non-white non-wealthy female, who due to being conservative and religious, was duped into supporting Trump.

I know this is a small shred of hope, but it is something, right?

@LurkingGrue that excellent video makes this same important point. Not all the people that voted for trump are bigots, but all the bigots voted for trump and now they think they have a majority. I really appreciate his message of making an extra effort to lift up the good right now. thanks for sharing. i’ve always liked his videos.

that video needs to be a front page post on BB right now.

I don’t think that would be a good idea. There was this silly guy a few years ago who had similar ideas … didn’t end well.

Perhaps we will have a universal, cleansing outrage and will be stronger because of it.

We need some kind of resignation-impeachment combo maneuver like Frank Underwood was able to orchestrate in House of Cards.

Trumpsplaining?

No, they were perfectly credible. But I have to say the insight Trump gave us into his mind set reall added to the overall picture.

But allegation is never proof on its own.

This seems so quaint 36 hours later.

Well it IS rigged to the advantage of the rich and powerful. A rich man has won the election right?

Trump supporters are not particularly worse off than the average

At what point can we take “politicians don’t care about people like me” to mean that more equality means I have to share more of the pie with people who historically got screwed over much worse?

Hillary supported minimum wage increases. She had plan to make college debt free, and therefor accessible to a lot of people to whom it would not previously have been. what did donald trump offer the working class that she didn’t?

I think this chart still works.

racking my brain. the only thing i can think of was that she was from within the establishment and he was from without, but that is very shortsighted as the establishment has been screwing over the working class for the benefit of the rich string pullers and he was certainly part of the string puller class even if he sucked at it.

oh and he has a penis for the sexist voters.

:sob:

Actually, much of this was caused by the great gerrymandering of 2010, by Republicans. In 2020, we need to push HARD for rational voting districts.

Maybe, but you came in with all the detail, and, y’know…actual facts…

Pretty well perfectly actually…

Without rehashing arguments of who lied, cheated, and did or will terrible things. Things really did follow that flowchart. If you wanted change, you needed Bernie of one of the republicans. Bernie and Cruz got knocked off in the primaries…so unless you go back to the top and decide you don’t need change, then Trump is the winner. You don’t want to be establishment in a movement election.

Eisenhower? Ronald Regan?

All of them used peacetime military buildup to stimulate the economy. We are still currently in a war that has been lasting a while and assisting in other wars which don’t make the news. (ex. US involvement in Africa is both extensive and not widely reported)

My beef is that right now we are treating soldiers and recent veterans like shit, but we are still fighting the same war for the last 15 years and going all “advisor” in a bunch of other places in the world. If we are going to be so involved, treat the people doing the job for us well godammit!

The military has always been a big business to America, until it stopped being one. The current military is a shadow of what it was in Gulf War I and II. No developed nation wants to buy Russian hardware if they can get away with it.

Naval and airforce buildup/improvement is not only expensive, but time consuming. You can’t build either up on the fly anymore like in WWII. If not for us, at least to sell to our allies. With China being all ornery to its neighbors, I am sure South Korea, Philippines, and Japan would love a few more Aegis cruisers for dealing with Chinese incursions on the Spratleys or Senkaku Islands/

As for the second part, point well taken. I doff my hat to thee

so how long until the country is bankrupt? Should we start a pool?

But how will we afford to be able to chip in?

I hope that your experience is more indicative of the general state of German society than mine - I hear a lot of sentimentalising over German patriotism - kind of falling into the ‘white men are the only people that you’re allowed to oppress’ category of ‘tiny violin’ complaint.
