The BBC wryly notes that “other winners of this accolade include Vladimir Putin, Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini”
It’s not really meant as an honor, just an acknowledgement of who has been influential on the world stage that year. Ayatollah Khomeini wasn’t exactly a friend of the US when he made that cover. And Josef Stalin was named “Man of the Year” not once but twice.
This is why the title of Person of the Year should be more morally aspirational, rather than just “whoever caused the most good or harm”. Narcissists are happy to take it as another trophy, and it’s already obvious that he feeds on media attention, including negative attention.
This guy fucking scares me.
