Trump lies about coronavirus, says U.S. now seeing "the light at the end of the tunnel."

This is starting to look like a good plan.

The problem as I see it is that there is a lag in cause and effect. You could easily get a case where in a week, the effects of social distancing cause a dip in newly confirmed cases as Trump orders “back to normal”, allowing the right wing media to claim immediate vindication, and then two weeks after that (longer if they reduce testing effort) confirmed cases explode as the effect of Trump’s measures hit.

He would lie to bolster the stock market, because he’s explicitly tied its success to his. And the market’s tanking.

Well, he kind of has to keep saying things like this since he promised it would just “go away” in April “like a miracle”

And since he accepted that he was the “annointed of god” and all that, he cannot be wrong. Maybe they should try having him touch the afflicted and see if they are cured on the spot.

Damn if he is not the poster child for doublethink and Newspeak:

"“Oceanic society rests ultimately on the belief that Big Brother is omnipotent and that the Party is infallible. But since in reality Big Brother is not omnipotent and the party is not infallible, there is need for an unwearying, moment-to-moment flexibility in the treatment of facts. The keyword here is BLACKWHITE. Like so many Newspeak words, this word has two mutually contradictory meanings. Applied to an opponent, it means the habit of impudently claiming that black is white, in contradiction of the plain facts. Applied to a Party member, it means a loyal willingness to say that black is white when Party discipline demands this. But it means also the ability to BELIEVE that black is white, and more, to KNOW that black is white, and to forget that one has ever believed the contrary.” "

I’ll be willing to believe we’ve turned a corner when it either shows in the numbers or my sister stops telling me about their new procedures for conserving PPE at a major well resourced research hospital. Until then I will put exactly my usual faith in Trump statements.

Because the lying is working. Despite manifest failures in the handling of this situation he has a higher approval than disapproval on his handling of COVID-19. If he can point to the (currently) higher rates of infection in places controlled by the Dems, then he can twist the narrative to help his reelection chances regardless of the actual course of the disease. After a period of media dithering his actual failures will be lost in the noise and he can pull the national unity rebuilding card to sail into office again.
