True, and a good point.
Also, to be fair, we don’t know for a fact that Procopius is the true author of the Secret History, or that the Secret History is true.
Furthermore, in most cases, we lack other sources by which to verify or discredit the book’s richly sordid assertions, freeing the reader to accept or reject the charges according to taste.
The Secret History may be …
- A malicious fraud by an unknown author or authors
- A true (or at least honestly-intentioned) document by someone other the Procopius
- A malicious fraud by Procopius
- Some combination of the above
- Something else altogether
We simply don’t know much about the book.
But it’s too much fun not to read and quote.
Tossing Drumpf out is short of the full solution we need, but it is a much-need good first step in the right direction.
