I grew up among hunters. Most–not all, but most–would be embarrassed and ashamed to tell the botched goat execution story, because “hunter” does not automatically imply sociopath. They hunted to feed their families, not to be cruel to animals. A “sloppy” kill was looked down upon.
And most of them had dogs that they loved in their own, manly way. Even when the dogs were kinda dumb/badly behaved. This idiot is an absolute shithead for telling this story for the lolz. It only appeals to animal cruelty enthusiasts–who Trump probably has in his camp–but alienates a nonzero number of hunters/gun owners.

ETA: Editors, advisers, publishers all read this before it was published, and likely asked if she was sure about including it. It’s also possible it was worse before, and this is the cleaned up version. I agree with others that it’s likely tailored to an audience of one, TFG is a known aficionado of “killers”.
