Before anyone gets their hopes up about this having an effect on the “support our troops” party, remember they’re the same people who wore “Purple Heart” bandaids at the RNC at the height of the Iraq war to make fun of John Kerry’s service in Vietnam.

Read this. Was gonna post it here somewhere. But it’s so much “here he shows you who he is and how he is playing those who support him”. It’s depressing. I hate militarism and the awful deification that surrounds it. I’m only sad about all the possible family members I never met because of it.

Trump is the reverse of entitled rich anti war people blaming the grunts for imperialist murder. He blames them only for being the Stooges.

This goes a way to explain his sincere belief that the military is a bunch of protection-racket goons and all our allies owe us money for them.

It won’t matter unless it was recorded.

It also won’t matter if it was recorded.

The term “punitive expedition” sometimes comes up in histories of Imperialism. Find a pretext to loot the offender’s capital.

Seems like that’s something that excites Donald Trump.

Honestly, you can definitely make an argument that there weren’t any “good guys” in the First World War. Imperialist war that only ended when workers revolutions swept Europe.

That monkey would make a better President.

But an American President should never have to ask which side he—as the Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces—is supposed to consider the “good guys.”

I work in metal and leather. I second this, although probably not how you intended it.

Fortunately, it looks like service members aren’t necessarily the reliable voting block the Republicans are thinking they are:

Don’t make assumptions. :grinning:

So this is the final straw for his supporters right? I mean it has to be this one. Right?

I always assumed his supporters were pro-army. Remember the time he wanted a Soviet-style military parade? And maybe incorrectly, I assumed those open carry people were his supporters (but maybe I’m wrong, they only like to pretend to be soldiers?)

There’s a big difference between being anti-war, and bad-mouthing veterans. It might be hard to be President and also pacifist, but veterans just follow policy and aren’t the enemy.

Is this pandering to the pacifist voters? It won’t balance things to bring them in.

He also said that he didn’t understand why the United States would intervene on the side of the Allies.

Well that… fits.

On the theme of fascism and “supporting the troops”:

Unfortunately, there’s a history to this sort of thing.

The pre-WWII German and Austrian Jewish community tried to defuse bigotry through overt patriotism; they volunteered for the army in WWI at higher rates than Christians did. But Jewish veterans were not exempt when the fascists gained power; instead, they were labelled as traitors and blamed for past defeats.

Fascist troop-worship has always been highly selective. Socialist WWI veterans in Italy and Germany were among the first victims of fascism.
