Sure! That I get. But the statement in question, the whole “just do it this time, you won’t have to do it any more,” trying to figure out what he means by that might be a fool’s errand, because I still believe it was him trying to pander to a crowd more than hinting to a specific plan.
I mean, everything you say is true. He is a serious threat. He will implement the Republic of Gilead and sell us out to Putin if he thinks it will get him a “get out of jail forever” card. And he’s doing it to get revenge on all of us who didn’t vote for him.
If we can, let’s tar him both with being a panderer who will say anything to get elected, but also as the racist, fascist asshole who really will sell us out to those he’s pandering to because he himself is that sort of weirdo scum asshole. He should never, ever be allowed into a position of power again.
This. Another aspect of the conflict in this thread is that, here we have an example of T**** saying that there won’t be elections if he wins (or otherwise takes power) in November, which has the power to wake up people who have underestimated or normalized his fascism. But some people manage to somehow disagree that is in fact what he said, yet somehow also say not to pay attention to that because we need to focus on beating him.
WTF do they think we’re trying to do!?! @anon61221983 raises a fantastic point that educating voters about what he said and what that means is part of how we beat him. Downplaying or misinterpreting what he said normalizes his fascism and aids T***.*
It’s pretty self-evident what he means here. I’m sorry, but it is, especially when put into the context of project 2025 and everything else he’s said and done, including his failed coup…
Again, context matters.
Facts matter, so highlighing his anti-democratic agenda needs more focus, from us as individuals and from the media. Once people started googling project 2025, making them aware of what it is, more people began to understand what’s at stake.
Just painting him as a weirdo panderer will not do it.
I think that far too many people just… underestimate most voters. That they need to be led around by the nose to make the “right” choice… I think most people DO have a better grasp of things than some might imagine. It’s just that some people don’t have the time to read long, indepth articles about politics. They just don’t have the time. But if they’re made aware of things like project 2025, and Trump’s statements like this, then they’re going to be more likely to vote against him.
The fascist stuff should lead. That should be enough. The weirdo pandering stuff wasn’t enough in 2016 and undercuts the argument about him being a fascist. If he’s just some weirdo, how could he possibly pull off the fascist stuff. It weirdly humanizes him, I think, or at least makes him seem less threatening than he actually is. It UNDERCUTS the reality of him being a fascist, in other words.
Big Journalism is doing back-flip contortions to help the Trump camp explain away his latest anti-democracy vows.
This Washington Post story (screenshot below, with alt-text of headline/deck) is an example of offering “both sides” (and even nuance!!!).
But the broader context – the firehose of anti-democracy authoritarianism he has spewed for years – makes it perfectly clear what Trump was getting at.
Why should he ever get the benefit of the doubt at this point?
Yeah, although in this case, he’s assured that the Project 2025 guys have got the whole “destroying democracy” thing covered. And for a change, it’s actually true.
That doesn’t surprise me. I expect that from Tom Cotton. The one that pissed me off was Chris Sununu. This jackass was painting himself as an anti-Trump, reasonable Republican earlier in the year. And now he’s sold out just like the rest of them.
“I think it was a classic Trumpism if you will,” he said to host Martha Raddatz on ABC’s “This Week.”
“Obviously we want everybody to vote in all elections, but I think he was just trying to make a hyberbolic point that it can be fixed as long as he gets back into office and all that,” Sununu said.
I think on any metric you care to use trumpy is unfit for office. Why anyone would waste their energy looking for nuance in his words is beyond me. He’s quite clearly not trying to implement fully automated luxury gay space communism for the betterment of all.
The only thing cryptic about it will be his team’s response when he is called out on it.
Someone coined the phrase “Schrodinger’s asshole” to describe the kind of behavior Trump’s exhibiting right now: if you liked it, he meant it; if you didn’t, he was just kidding. The actual meaning of his words are indeterminate until someone opens the box.
It has been thus since he first rode that damn elevator to his announcement speech. It is the defining mark of a bullshitter.
Among all the gibberish, it also stated clearly “I’m not christian”. I think this is the real nugget. Does Trump identify as Jewish or Atheist or with some other form of theism? If so, what do his evangelical followers think of this? Or was this just the demon that animates his earthly vessel letting one slip?
It’s telling that he hasn’t bothered clarifying his point. If we’re all wrong, and he doesn’t want to destroy democracy, then he or his toadies would surely have issued a clarifying statement by now. Has he? I can’t find it.
