Trump shooter rejected from school rifle club because he had such bad aim: "dangerous"

Figures.

He could have been rejected for being dangerous on the range - poor safety awareness.

But that was several years ago and you can practice. The distance is not excessive. Many people have noted that it’s what Army recruits are expected to achieve in boot camp with a properly sighted-in rifle.

Three dead in a violent attack is a tragedy, but a tragedy on par with a knife attack (Also: crossbow ≠ bow & arrow). Mass shooters with AR-15s and similar weapons often kill dozens of people at a time. I will take the threat of a crazed archer over the threat of a crazed gunman any day of the week.

@Jesse13927 I feel like this shouldn’t really need to be said but that movie is a work of fiction.

Oh, yeah, my point was that it’s so rare even in fiction that it stands out when you come across it in film.

Crossbows are more damaging than a bow and arrow, but they have a slower rate of fire. That probably makes them a poorer choice for mass violence.

They require less skill, though, making them more effective for some. Which is also why they succeeded historically, despite being less effective than a bow and arrow on all other metrics

Not loads slower:

possibly less than a skilled archer though, you’re probably right,

Weren’t they used differently than bows and arrows, though? Bows and arrows are for longer distances and crossbows were used in closer ranges to break armor. I’m not sure and don’t really care to find out the truth about what would work best in a modern context.

In many respects a crossbow is less an extension of archery than it is a low-tech version of firearms.

None of the archery ranges I’ve been to even allow crossbows.

Not really, no. That is a bit of a myth stemming from the 19th century nationalist mythmaking around the English longbow (and yes, I say English on purpose, as the Welsh connection wasn’t stressed at the time). Their role on the battlefield and in siege warfare wasn’t really all that different.

ETA: and even I have succumbed to the myth making, apparently, as a bit of research shows that crossbows were probably superior in range, and possibly even equal in rate of fire

I imagine that modern crossbows, with fiendish use of materials and many pulleys, can release a scary amount of force.

There are compound archery bows with a pulley system to generate lots of driving power from a light pull.

However, an AR15 is still vastly superior to anything like that, except perhaps for quiet shooting.

Maybe if the shooter had a different skin color . . .

(excerpt) The database, which “was first obtained and revealed by Channel 4 News” in 2020, showed “that both the parents of Thomas Crooks were very likely to be gun owners and shared other gun-related lifestyle indicators.”

Trump’s 2016 campaign listed Crooks as “a strong republican, likely gun owner and ‘hunter’,”

And I find it hard to believe that even the Uvalde police would be too frightened to stop a murderer with a bow or a knife.

I thought this too, but in the sense he was there to shoot someone else. Maybe he’s an excellent shot and took out the firefighter that he was mad at?

Or maybe he’s a poor shot, someone else was the target (crush that turned him down? teacher who failed him last semester?), hitting the firefighter, TFG, others, due to poor marksmanship?

The longer we go without a manifesto or note explaining himself, I’m not convinced TFG was the target.

Since TFG was hit, possibly by a bullet, does not mean that’s what dude was aiming at. This assumption could be leading everyone on a wild goose chase.

And maybe he was trying to shoot the flies circling Trump’s wretched scalp as a favor to his God-Emperor

I seriously don’t know if you are bring sarcastic or not.

And sure, it’s possible that, despite the mounds of historical precedence of shooters doing it (mass shooting event with some high profile - don’t forget the shooter had bombs in his car, apparently) to go down in the history books in a blaze of glory by causing some serious chaos (many of them inspired by Columbine) THIS young white male shooter is TOTES MCGOATS different…

Time to speculate WILDLY as we flail down the slope to fascism! Indulging in conspiracist fantasies fixes EVERYTHING after all! /s

If this was an NCIS episode we would learn the bystander killed was the real intended target.
