Trump threatens GOP control of Twitter, Facebook: 'We will strongly regulate, or close them down'

The thing about Twitter is, as some have pointed out, it’s not so much where Trump fans are, it’s where everyone in the media is - and where they’ll see and amplify his tweets by responding to them. Trump moving to an alternative social media network would be shooting himself in the dick - no media there, so far less attention. There’s a reason they were “checking out” alternative social media - and then not moving over there.

Wait, they seriously flocked (hah) away from a place called Twitter toward a place with a foreign French name? I would not have expected that.

He is definitely laying the groundwork for a revolt, if he loses. He is literally saying the election will not be valid, meaning he doesn’t plan to accept the results if they don’t go his way. This is an extremely dangerous time.

Amen.

Although the messenger in this circumstance is the worst, I don’t really disagree with regulating FB, Twitter, etc. - or at least imposing some long-dormant anti-trust regulation on them. And much as the initial idea that the internet needed to be treated as the carrier rather than a publisher when it came to speech was good, I think the algorithms used on these platforms blur that line far beyond its initial intent. Sure, you aren’t a publisher when you are just allowing things to flow across your wires, but when you start promoting certain things over and above other things? Is that still not publishing?

I don’t trust this administration to do the regulating, but regulating overall is not a bad idea.

What will the country do about him?

The administration would have a tough time doing the regulating considering it stripped resources and budgets from every agency which has the ability to harm corporate interests in general.

No offense, but predicting what that individual is going to do by imagining the worst and most mean spirited possible reaction to any given event doesn’t exactly make you Nostradamus.

Even carriers have a responsibility to remove/block certain kinds of traffic.

If promoting made-up bullshit to empower yourself politically is A-OK in Trump’s book, then perhaps Biden should start talking about stories he’s heard of Secret Service agents being tasked to buy adult diapers, and the hidden underground sex dungeon where Don Jr. gets spanked while watching animal porn.

I mean, "People are saying ___ " and “how come nobody’s asking about ___ ?” etc etc etc.

That hardly narrows it down

And I’m so glad he hasn’t got one. Imagine how he would have abused poor Patton, the dog he would have almost adopted for publicity reasons.

Would you really put it past that man to kick a dog in frustration?

They’re governed by the almighty dollar. Users, except ones that help bring in traffic and dollars, are governed by their TOS.

Well, they have my vote now! /s

(Let’s just ignore the irony of free-market anti-regulation capitalist Republicans suddenly flipping to supporting heavy regulation and government intervention into businesses.)

That works best as a hovering threat, and especially if your victim lacks deep pockets. When your targets have far more to spend than the Do(in)J does, things get a lot stickier. Worse yet when they have centuries of black-letter law on their sides.

And then there’s the optics of siccing the supposedly impartial Do(in)J on someone on the eve of your attempt at re-election.

Mangolini is stupid enough to try it. I really doubt Barr is. Which is why the (former) candidates for victimhood might be wise to start the ball themselves.

What crimes would be involved here?

This wouldn’t be a DOJ issue as much as a FCC or FTC issue. Neither of those agencies have much clout since Trump stripped them bare and put kleptocrats in charge of them.

And the part that establishes the Electoral College. That’s is pretty damn important to him.

The point of a suit for declarative judgment is that it moots the whole “which limb of the octopus will strike” question. The President who, according to Republican “unitary executive” doctrine wiggles all of those tentacles, has made a threat against a publisher for cautioning readers regarding content on their site. Regardless of the line of attack planned, the publisher has a 230-year established right to publish what they wish and especially to disagree with the Federal government. A threat from that government to retaliate against the publisher with powers that are in theory constrained by both statutory and Constitutional law to be content neutral is sufficient basis for seeking a court determination that the threat is a bluff.

The USA is now officially a Banana Republic. And no, I’d really rather not look at it.

But now it is on the verge of becoming a full-blown fascist state.

What in Barr’s words or actions lead you to the conclusion that he would hesitate to allow the DOJ to be seen as an explicitly partisan organization in the service of Trump’s personal interests?
