These kinds of simplistic correlations may allow thin people to feel superior and blame fat people for their obesity, but we know for a fact it’s not that simple. There are a lot of factors that impact weight gain - viral infections, gut flora, central heating/cooling, shifts in ingredients in processed foods, not to mention simple genetics - some people’s bodies simply don’t turn excess calories into fat, for example. Yes, pertty much everyone could afford to eat better and exercise more, but changes in calorie consumption and exercise patterns fail to fully explain obesity on the epidemiological level nor necessarily in individual cases, either.
Are you attacking what I said as simplistic? Are you ignoring the part where I added ‘look for other causes’? I’m saddled with other causes, but I recognize that I have a need and a responsibility to eat less and move more as a starting point.
dont hesitate, collaborate! i fully appreciate that even when obesity is caused by diet and inactivity, there are strong social and psychological forces at work.
are these cases a scientifically significant percentage? and in the cases where it is, could an improved gut biome significantly improve the individuals chances of reaching a healthy equilibrium.
i think you hit on something important here. why is it you are considered "overweight? because you dont fit some national average? or an artificial marketing perception? i have no doubt you are at a much better level of overall health than i am, even though i may look the part. when i refer to obesity, im not talking about a few pounds. i do not believe in the standard practice of “you are X ft tall, you should weigh X lbs.”. i think this mode of thought and treatment can lead to some of the psychological weight i referred to above. i like to think that as the medical community continues to understand how the human body works as an ecosystem, these types of issues will be better treated and managed. starvation is just as bad as obesity, yet one is generally used to treat the other.
Since the thread is just about over, I’m going to declare “Sharing brownies with the sick, along with the recipe” as my go-to euphemism for this from now on.
