Twitter’s U-turn is understandable, but that doesn’t mean we should be happy about its willingness to take down tweets on-demand for foreign governments. Rob Beschizza explains why this is going to suck.
Another reason why relying upon a for-profit service for social media instead of a decentralized protocol is A Bad Idea. If hypertext was proprietary like this, the internet would never have happened. I see these social media companies more like a throwback to Compuserve, Prodigy, GEnie, et al. People fled those in droves for the more open systems when they were available.
