Two planes crash mid-air near L.A., killing pilot. One lands just yards from woman and granddaughter
Both of those planes are vintage military trainers, and not especially common in the US. I doubt that it was pure coincidence that they were flying close to each other. My guess would be that they either were flying in close formation or maybe practicing some kind of mock air battle.
People often don’t recognize how large and how populous the county is.
That one county is home to more people than any of the states marked blue on this map.
I’m an active current commercial pilot flying in the back country, and I hate to paint a bad picture. But mid-air collisions in small planes happen more than once a year (as stated in Boing write up). This year alone I’ve probably read half a dozen reports on mid-airs.
I used to fly tight formation flying and aerobatics in loose formation. Too many close calls made me leave that “hobby” behind. The risk/reward quotient was way out of whack. Considering the aircraft involved (virtually the same types) it seems likely they were doing a bit of close work. Such a shame.
Uhm, if both the accident site and downtown LA are in that red area, I would say they are pretty close together compared to the rest of the country
