When I saw “philosophy student” and “tracks” I thought the post was going to be about a delusional person trying to create the trolley problem in real life. Instead it’s just about a self-entitled dick.

I was going to say “the trolley problem is a thought experiment, not a guidebook”

Trolley problem is actually a philosophy student problem.

I couldn’t decide which trolley problem comic would be best for this thread, so just enjoy them all.

“Sheriff McCormick acknowledged Naeb’s age, lack of prior convictions, and personal circumstances.”

Does anyone know what “personal circumstances” means in this context and how it excuses nearly killing someone?

“Acknowledged” ≠ “Excuses”

I have no idea.

Obviously the perp is in the UK on a student visa. That will be rescinded due to his conviction, so he will be deported once he finishes his sentence. His PhD of course is ruined, at great personal and financial cost. All that on top of 20 months in prison.

So, quite a lot of punishment.

We can’t have people pushing other people onto train tracks and so on because they got in a snit, yet can this sort of punishment deter crimes which are momentary irrational.

‘Perhaps Naeb forgot Badiou’s famous quote, “Evil is the moment when I lack the strength to be true to the Good that compels me.”’

Or maybe he’s just an a*hole

Looks like he failed the lab portion of the trolley problem.
