The report I read said the A-50 was indeed destroyed in mid-air but the other one was hit and damaged but managed to land (according to Russian sources).

Yeah, from what I saw, the A-50 was flying a racetrack that brought it closer that safe to Ukraine; while the IL-22 was operating down by the Kerch Bridge.
