Spielberg? That was Emmerich, no?
I’m probably being unfair on Raiders, anyway.

Oh shit, that’s right!
That’s hilarious. I’ve said in the past that the movie was Emmerich trying to be Spielberg and here I am getting them mixed up.
Raiders was pure old school movie serial fun with a good script and effects team. I even like Jurassic Park even though there was a big wait what… how did… okay it is movie logic let’s just move along when watching in the theater for the first time. When he is not trying to use a sledgehammer to get emotions across and making popcorn film he does okay.
Be warned: Fury has some very graphic violence. Sprogs should not be nearby if you watch this movie.
So @melizmatic said something about my hypothetical wife and now you’re talking about my hypothetical sprogs, while a classmate yesterday asked, “You’re married, right?” Then JUST NOW I checked my phone and the car mechanic had called and said in a message that either “you or your wife” may have hit something on the road. Either this is some weird-ass synchronicity or the universe is actively trying to get me hitched and befamilied.
But I was at your wedding! You named your son after me!
Oh, little OtherAbe - daddy doesn’t always drink this much.
lol. It was more a warning for the wider audience in the thread who may have kids too young for rated R for Violence.
I’ve only ever seen the 1951 version (via MST3K, of course):

(most bizarrely, I really didn’t like Grosse Point Blank the first time I saw it, and now it’s one of my favourite films…)[/quote]
I think that one gets better as you get older.
It’s why he still hasn’t made a better film than Jaws.
He directed an episode of The Name of the Game that I would rate higher. I also liked Duel more, but it came out on TV while I was in driver’s ed so it had an extra immediacy for me.
Okay we will use the Edgar Rice Burroughs title but base it on another book entirely.
Also why have I not see this?
For proper Burroughs fun with Doug McClure there is
The Land That Time Forgot
I vaguely remember a movie that was a combination of #1 and #2 – a corkscrew-nosed ship (not as long as the victorian one) digs through to an underground world. Shortly thereafter one of the crew gets tramped by a rampaging triceratops. I don’t remember anything else, but it doesn’t seem victorian.
Ring any bells?
I saw part of it in the basement of the neighbor’s house; same place I saw Lost Continent. Unless it was at Scott’s house?
Oh jeez there are movies out there I have forgot I have seen but At The Earths Core is the only underworld/dino/drilling machine one I can recall. I more than likely have seen bits of another if not all of it.
Watched Filth yesterday. An odd little film (a bit Bad Lieutenant-y?), although McAvoy is very good. Still wondering how they’ll wrangle Porno into something filmable for Trainspotting 2.
Also watched Where to Invade Next the other day. I liked it although I think Moore’s cherry picking gets more and more obvious.
Got Anomalisa to watch soon. I normally love Charlie Kaufman, but what I’ve heard of this one, and the interviews that Kaufmann gave about it has reduced my hopes somewhat.
Looks like Trumbo just arrived at the library, too.
So, if you’ve read Ready Player One … I peek at the IMDB page for the upcoming movie, because I want to see who’s being cast as who. There’s a character listed named “F’nale Zandor” who doesn’t appear in the book and I am really REALLY afraid that this is a code name for another character that hasn’t yet been announced. I will be really disappointed if that is the case because they have cast the wrong actor if so.

And…I didn’t much like it. Very restrained for Kaufman, and the whole film revolves around a pretty repellant character whose story isn’t very compelling. Great animation, though.
I guess all his characters are self obsessed and going through life crises, so maybe it isn’t that far from his earlier work, but something was a bit off. I shall have to ponder. Perhaps it was just lacking the scale of imagination of his earlier films. Reading about it, it seems like Kaufman really wants to direct his own work, but when he does it ends up being a commercial disaster, so he might not get to again.
I watched “American Ultra” last night. Need an example of “so awful it’s good”? This qualifies… I enjoyed it anyway. Some weed may have been involved, so YMMV.
Terminator: Genisys is underrated IMO. As long as you accept the inevitability of paradoxes that look suspiciously like plot holes, and certain plot developments being written in for maximum fun and opportunities for FX rather than maximum logic, I think it’s a fine entry in the franchise.
I heard great things about the Sarah Connor chronicles, too.
