Given that we seem to be on the crux of falling into a fascist state, and that we have wondered, with the benefit of hindsight, just how it happened in other places and times, just what can we do to stop this? I do not want to go down as one of those “goos Germans” who stood by and watched as the reich ramped up the final solution, but I’m buggered if I can figure out how to affect this. Voting, obviously, but what else? It seems a small, distant hope that we will arrive at a functional election this year. Are we at storming the White House? Freeing the kids in detention facilities with a band of mercenaries? Million person occupations of federal plazas? Pleas to the EU for military support for our brave rebels?
Pandemic be dammed, I’d rather not have future historians say “well, they had a good run for their money, but the confluences of 2020 are what killed America.”
I know this thread is USA, where the Police weren’t set up under the Peelian Principles, but in some places #7 :
To maintain at all times a relationship with the public that gives reality to the historic tradition that the police are the public and that the public are the police, the police being only members of the public who are paid to give full-time attention to duties which are incumbent on every citizen in the interests of community welfare and existence.
I would wager that many/most of us got to adulthood believing that those ideas originally underpinned American policing as well.
The worrisome thing is that the civil rights lawsuits are inevitable. Either these operations are approved by people with short attention spans, or they’re expecting forgiveness in the long run.
It always seems to top out at a few thousand, and the Man can clearly manage that level of disruption
We’ve got unmarked vans with unmarked military picking up “protesters” randomly, and hours later letting them go. These “protesters” were on a list - they all supposedly wrote graffiti.
So we have some shadowy branch of military-type operatives - the DHS, apparently - deciding to terrify not only those people they picked up, but all of us watching. It is terrifying to see something from a fictional thriller reenacted on city streets in America. So does this technically make them terrorists? Don’t we have the Patriot Act that’s supposed to deal with that?
or they’ve seen that people in the shrub administration were never prosecuted, and that this administration is happy to commute the sentences of criminals friendly with the trumps - so consequences be damned.
this is especially true if they’re able to use these techniques they’re practicing for disrupting the election
Sorry, I thought I read “civilians”, not “citizens”. Cops are obviously citizens, but not civilians. That’s what I get for posting while working.
And since no one seems to understand* the point I was trying to make about making change happen in other, more effective ways than standing across the street taunting a line of heavily armed police in the middle of the night, I’ll just get outta this thread.
ETA: * or agree with
And they know the Obama Administration did nothing about war crimes, crimes against humanity, the housing scandal, the derivatives traders or anything else, really. All it did was prosecute whistleblowers, so the Gestapo will skate under a conservative Biden administration
You keep saying that. Police are not members of the military. They are civilians.
Anyone not in the military is a civilian.
#EndQualifiedImmunity
the mayor is an idiot, so other local leaders are going to have to maneuver him out of the way
Sorry, it was me that jumped words.
Where’s the tipping point? I’m ready for some revolution.
