Hard to imagine there’s much recoverable value in high-performance fighter jet that’s spent a couple of weeks (or days or hours) submerged in 12,000 feet of seawater. The reliability standards for that sort of aircraft are incredibly high.
I think the point was to deny it to ‘other powers’ rather than any other purpose.
