Vice President Pence refuses to wear mask for Mayo Clinic visit, despite it asking him to

If Secret Service is charged with protecting VPOTUS’s life, shouldn’t they have insisted he take this reasonable precaution?!

Maybe, just maybe, they let it slip…

I went to a platelet donation Saturday just gone and whilst all the staff were wearing masks, none of the visitors were. We were all asked to wash our hands on entry but that was it. Whether it’s due to a lack of face masks in the UK, I don’t know.

Then you tell the SS that NOT Masking is an immediate threat to the life of the Veep, and they should treat it like him NOT wearing BSL in a war zone.

Just gotta do a little of the old audience adaptation.

It’s not just about Coronavirus. The notion that some things are facts, that people with certain educations and research positions are in the best position to determine facts, and that facts don’t change with the will of the observer, regardless of whether or not they are convenient, is now a partisan issue.

The old Colbert standby of “truthiness” is unfortunately just not that funny in the current climate of life-endangering fact denial but still stands.

His master - Trump.

If someone is an inpatient at Mayo, it means they’ve exhausted all their local and regional experts. They’re not there for a routine tonsillectomy; they’re seriously ill in some way. Under those circumstances, a visitor to their hospital room (more like a dozen visitors crammed in together) should be wearing a mask to protect them from ANYTHING: cold, flu, strep throat, etc.

This is willful attempted manslaughter, as far as I’m concerned.

Something to remember: there are many other hospitals that need donations just as much as Mayo.

This is so maddening. Everyone knows idiots like Trump, Pence, and Jarod will do stupid, reckless things because they are idiots and horrible people to the core.

But SOMEONE has to be the adult in the room, and you’d think that would be Mayo. It’s such a fucking letdown that they can’t be trusted to do this SIMPLEST, TINYEST BIT of the right thing.

Whatever happened to “first, do no harm” ? They violated the basic principle of medicine. And not for any potential benefit. He didn’t have to be there for any reason whatsoever.

What a letdown.

This wasn’t really a difficult situation to control.

Mayo: Masks are required for all.

Pence: My boss said I’d better not.

Mayo: OK. We’ll just stand here and talk in the lobby, since you don’t know where to go and we’re not taking you any further.

No Secret Service confrontation, no flouting of the rules.

Next day at Trump press rally…

“Yeah, we’re cutting all federal funding to the Mayo Clinic… they were mean to mike.”

Not that that wouldn’t be the right call, to keep him out. Just that it would have serious consequences that they might not wish to take on.

He probably thinks Jesus will protect him, but ~40 priests and a bishop in Italy would say otherwise.

He doesn’t realize or care that not only is he putting himself at risk, his behavior will influence those of others, which will put many, many people at risk.

Side note - been to the Mayo Clinic before. It was pretty awesome.

“You know the only reason he didn’t wear a mask is because Trump won’t wear one, right?” Kimmel posited on the Tuesday edition of his eponymous late-night show. “Mike Pence, he’s required to keep his lips free at all times for kissing his master’s ass.”

Hospital should have out its foot down: “No mask, n photo opp”.

The picture reminds me of some of those Medieval illustrations of Jesus, standing out from the crowd of mere mortals around him. or some damned super hero:

“Stand back citizens, I, Vice-President Man shall approach the infected one safely for I am protected by the Power Trump and naught can harm me.”

Few people are willing to stand up to Power and tell it it is being stupid or harming others or that it too must follow the damn safety rules or get the hell out.

Dr. Polaris: You won’t wash your hands?
Lex Luthor: No, because I am evil.

To be fair, that was the Flash (Wally West)'s mind in Lex’s body at the time.

And one of the best episodes of the series.

“Now I will know the Flash’s secret identity!”
[Takes cowl off]
“I have no idea who this is.”

Pence would say, “No, because I’m evil and Jesus loves you.”
