His tumor may or may not make him unfit for office at this point, but this is exactly what McCain has done his whole career. His bullshit “maverick” persona was the branding creation of a public relations firm, and he’s never meaningfully strayed from straight conservative R votes. His entire career has been built on giving good sounding clips to journalists that make him seem like a stand-up guy and then dutifully voting exactly how Republican leadership wants him to vote.

Fair enough. Like I said, loudly talking about doing one thing and then immediately doing the other, both on camera, is a bizarre way to lie. But if you’ve been getting away with doing exactly that for decades, then why wouldn’t you?
