Last night for a work event I attended the first major-league game that I’ve been to in at least 30 years. It was painfully slow and boring, with what I’m told are two of the worst teams in the league right now, and it dragged on for 13 innings. One of my coworkers had suggested that it might be more tolerable if they used bat dogs instead of bat boys and I wholeheartedly agree. As it was, the bat “boys” were men who looked like they were in their 50s. I never thought about it but I guess you can make a whole career out of that job?

(undoubtedly some perversity of mental alignment, but even reading the headline here, i imagined a dog which retrieved chiropterans)

Yeah, being a UKian, and not steeped in baseball lore, this was my first thought too.
Baseball: uniquely American.
