To be fair, that’s because hibiscuses don’t lurk (or do well in the dark). An Aubrey II might be different.
That said, most edible vegetables aren’t really living things anyway, just specific pieces of them. You can enjoy asparagus or rhubarb without even killing the plant.

And from what I understand, on the tree of life, animals are closer relatives to mushrooms and other fungi than plants.
That’s just the sort of complacent thinking they want you to think!
