I agree. I do like Paul Reubens voice better. I think comedic voice-overs work better if the actor isn’t trying to hard to be amusing.
That’s the thing though, Fleischer’s Roger Rabbit is always trying hard to be amusing, it’s his raison d’être.
One interesting thing I noticed, the actor playing Eddie Valiant in the scene with proto-Jessica Rabbit looks a lot more like author Gary Wolf as Valiant from the cover of his book, than Bob Hoskins eventually would:
A more childlike Roger would work fine for a stand-alone character but it would also make the Roger/Jessica relationship pretty creepy.
Granted, Baby Herman’s love life was creepy too but he was supposed to be a creep.
I can’t help but notice that the only person not credited in the “Starring” card at the end is the woman who played Jessica.
