There was a history “teacher” (he was a football coach, but he was assigned to teach a history class) in my high school back in the 80s who often said that Hitler was just misunderstood. Everyone just chuckled and shook their heads, “Oh, that crazy Coach (I do not remember his name or I would put it here)!” Luckily, I had Coach Vantrease for history. All he did was engage in corporal punishment as a form of expressing his affection for students. He liked to grab students in this spot between your neck and shoulder and just squeeze the shit out of it. He thought it was endearing. I just thought it hurt. Do coaches still teach history? Can we stop that practice?

Same shit here. Ours was a Phys.Ed. who also taught Math. Complete arsehole.

For some weird reason his schoolyard nickname was “cardboard box”.

(I never figured out why - he wasn’t a big bloke, but he wore badly-cut sky-blue suits.)

I later had a friend who taught history at a high school in Oklahoma. He actually had a degree in history. He also was black, and the school constantly tried to get him to coach sports and could not seem to comprehend the fact that he was neither interested in sports, qualified to coach, nor was he even particularly athletic himself. To the school…a black man teaching history should also be a coach.

Look, Hitler really only did one thing wrong: commit an unimaginably horrible, evil crime against humanity on an epic scale. Surely the fact that he hung the toilet paper roll in the proper overhand manner makes up for this.

Seriously there are likely a lot more actual phds teaching at the HS level, since the job market for colleges are so bad right now.

I too had a coach for a history class, but he was pretty good, actually. I also had a coach for a computer class…

I have some very wealthy friends from NYC who have a 15 year old daughter. I was driving her and my kids to lasertag and we were playing “slug bug” with other cars because there are no VW bugs anymore. She proceeded to tell us how Hitler created the Autobahn and Volkswagen to help the common man. It was really odd. I told her, “You know how you don’t end that story? By saying anything good about Hitler.”

The right wing has gone full Nazi. It is scary.
